OUR MISSION    NEST+m, a New York City Department of Education city-wide co-educational institution for the Gifted and Talented, is committed to providing an exemplar education for students who have the ability and promise to meet the demands of an academically challenging curriculum.

The Lower School (K-5) builds in its students the confidence and ability to articulate using strategies of inquiry that enable them to explore complex ideas. The Middle School (6-8) challenges students to develop effective organizational strategies, and to build on their communication skills and personal strengths. The Upper School (9-12) engages students to think abstractly and critically, and encourages them to formulate questions that guide their learning experience via discussions and research.

OUR VISION    NEST+m endeavors to produce young scholars distinguished by their intellectual capabilities, communication skills, capacity for leadership, ethical values, and readiness to contribute to the betterment of the world-at-large.

EDUCATION @ NEST + m

The NEST+m central educational philosphy begins in the Lower School with thematic units of study, Singapore math, and science in the core curriculum. Students also study a World language (Spanish), chess, dance, physical education, art, music, and select an interest from the School-wide Enrichment Model.     Our Middle School curriculum highlights include advisory for grade 6 students, the choice of a World language (Spanish, French, or Mandarin), the 7th grade PBIS science course for 6th graders, and Singapore math until 7th grade followed by NYS Regents level mathematics in the 8th grade. 7th graders take NYS Regents Living Environment and 8th graders take NYS Regents Earth science; science and math classes are single-gender in grades 6-8.       Upper School 9th grade students have a 9-period day which includes NYS graduation requirements in music and art appreciation, health, and the NEST+m requirement of one semester of computer science (this year it is the computer language JAVA). 10th - 12th grade students may elect to have an 8-period day. We have an all Regents level and Advanced Placement course curriculum and more advanced electives such as number theory. Our Upper School science sequence begins with Regents physics or Earth science in 9th grade, followed by chemistry and then biology.  Our College Now progam partner is Hunter College where students may take upto 12 college credits  free in even more advanced courses. Our science research class supported by New York University had its first ever semi-finalist in the Siemens science competition.   Our 2008-09 plans include tennis, swim-gym, the addition of Latin as another World language choice, and engineering courses. THE SCHOOL NEST + m

Uniquely, NEST+m is one  K-12 school subdivided into three levels, the Lower School (K-5), the Middle School (6-8) and the Upper School (9-12), housed in one contiguous building and with one educational philosophy.     NEST+m established in the fall of 2001 has occupied a building designed and built in the late 1950’s. It is a three-story structure reminiscent of the formalism architectural style prominent during that period. There is a newly renovated gymnasium plus a large music room on the lower floor; the Dining Hall and two dance rooms on the first floor; the main entrance, offices, library, theater, K-5 classrooms, and music and art rooms on the second floor; 6-12 classrooms, science labs, art gallery and space, and dance room on the third floor.     Our central courtyard was remodeled and outfitted with jungle gyms for our Lower School children with a contribution from Toys-R-Us. The lunch tables in the courtyard are often used by our high school students during the warm months. Our south side courtyard is equipped with basketball hoops and is generally used by 6-12 graders.     Our art gallery, used for lectures in art appreciation classes also displays student artwork.  Our newest and larger art gallery space, yet to be named, on the third floor over looking the central courtyard, just recently had its first ever show of selected 8th graders'  art.     Our Science Seminars, attended by students, teachers, and parents, feature scientists and scholars from across the disciplines with an emphasis on the sciences.
